This is such great news for Australia and the environment, but long overdue. Beyond Zero Emissions has been advocating for these vehicle efficiency standards since publishing our report "Electric Vehicles" in 2016. Having personally worked on several submissions calling for these standards on behalf of BZE, it's gratifying to see them finally passed into law. These standards will mean Australia will see more EVs on its roads which will lower carbon emissions, help us save on fuel (Australians could save an average of $1,350 a year by switching to an electric vehicle), and reduce road noise and pollution, improving our health. We still need to see more in this space to electrify commercial electric vehicles like trucks and buses; BZE believes that Australia can make more of these and further cut transport emissions. https://lnkd.in/gFspdhNs

Thought - It's good to see The University of Queensland running two #hydrogen shuttle buses (non-commercial service) to connect its various campuses. It makes me wonder how this would work when expanded to commercial services—how effective and economical it could be compared to current #CNG and #diesel buses. Wouldn't it be forward-thinking for the Brisbane City Council, Translink Queensland, Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Government to consider launching a few hydrogen-powered buses on a trial basis as part of a pilot program? I also heard about Transdev project, which involves two hydrogen buses running somewhere in Brisbane, although I have yet to encounter them. While the current lack of hydrogen refueling infrastructure is a challenge, starting with a limited deployment within Brisbane could be a great step toward a future H2 bus service. Such a pilot project could inspire many Queenslanders, including startup entrepreneurs and researchers working in renewable hydrogen, electrolysis, and fuel cell systems. With the Brisbane 2032 Summer #Olympics on the horizon, transitioning to hydrogen-powered buses could be an ambitious yet achievable goal for the city's sustainable transport future.

🌍 Strides in renewable energy with Andrew Forrest's Squadron Energy The company received approval for a 64 MW "hydrogen-ready" gas generator and a 20 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer in NSW, Australia. 🌱💡 🔋 This dual facility aims to support Squadron's wind and solar projects, including the 404 MW Uungala wind farm and the 700 MW Spicers Creek Wind Farm. The addition of battery projects further bolsters their commitment to sustainable energy. 🏭 Located in Dubbo, the plant will primarily operate when other sources can't meet demand, ensuring grid stability. Yet, it operates with a low capacity factor of just over 12%, highlighting the challenges of intermittent renewable sources. 🚫 Critics raise concerns about using fossil gas and the economic feasibility of green hydrogen. Yet, Squadron is mandated to produce hydrogen using only renewable electricity, aligning with their green vision. 🛠️ The project, expected to create 150 jobs during construction and 6 ongoing roles, is a step towards blending traditional and renewable energies but still faces economic and operational hurdles. #RenewableEnergy #GreenHydrogen #SustainableDevelopment #EnergyTransition #ClimateAction

Researchers from The University of Queensland have outlined 5 key steps needed to speed up Australia’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs). The Federal Government recently passed the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) requiring car makers to reduce carbon emissions for new vehicles from January 2025. Dr Kai Li Lim, Dr Dia Adhikari Smith and Associate Professor Archie Chapman say the legislation was an important step toward sustainable transport, incentivising car manufacturers to export their most fuel-efficient vehicles to Australia. The researchers have outlined 5 further measures that would put Australia on the road to an EV future. Catalytic converters have been an issue that's ebbed and flowed in the last few years... conveniently at the near same rate that the prices of the precious metals in them have. After the last 3 years of concentrated efforts by law enforcement, legislators, prosecutors, and legitimate metal businesses, Washington State passed HB 2153 to implement a stronger 1) prevention plan and 2) set of consequences for those choose to victimize others. The harsh reality for victims of this crime is one of extreme costs and disrupted livelihoods. Even for those covered by insurance, the necessary repairs can run thousands of dollars. All while the car remains undriveable, leaving folks without means to get to work, school, etc. So while thefts are down with the metal prices right now, when they come back up, Washington is better prepared to protect its people. #publicsafety #crime #traffic #catalyticconverters https://lnkd.in/gKCnGK7t

Delighted to share my article on the new vehicle efficiency standards published in the Australian Environment Review. The article attempts to describe what the legislation actually means in terms of the targets. This surge in availability has doubled the number of EV models on the market over the past year, introducing a wide array of choices for consumers. Despite this increase in options and a noticeable drop in the average drive-away price of EVs, there is a surprising and concerning trend—sales of EVs are not meeting expectations. Data from industry sources reveals that while there are now 150 EV models available, up from 67 at the start of 2023, consumer adoption has not kept pace. The anticipated surge in EV sales has not materialized as predicted, leading to questions about the long-term viability and consumer appeal of electric vehicles in Australia. This scenario prompts a deeper exploration of alternative energy solutions for the automotive industry. One promising contender that may offer a more sustainable and practical solution is hydrogen. At the Institute of Automotive Engineers (IAME), we are committed to supporting innovation and exploring all viable options for the future of transportation. The German Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and BMW Australia showcased the BMW iX5 Hydrogen earlier this week at BMWs Head Office. The presentation by Dr Juergen Guldner outlined the potential for vehicles and especially in the public transport and heavy haulage sectors, who operate over consistent and predetermined routes. Just like a battery electric vehicle (BEV), a hydrogen or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) has an electric drive – in fact the identical electric motor. The main difference is the energy storage system: instead of electricity in the battery, gaseous hydrogen is stored in tanks and converted into electrical energy for the drive unit by means of the fuel cell. The main advantage for drivers is that a hydrogen car can be completely refuelled in 3-4 minutes and can, depending on circumstances have a range up to 500 km and delivers a maximum power of 295Kw. #TRANSEARCH #BMW iX5
